2024 National Newsletter – End Of Year Recap

by Mike Ginani | Jan 16, 2025 | National Newsletter, News

2024 Highlights for Am Law 100: Highlights for Am Law 100 2024: most active year since 2022; New York, D.C., L.A., Chicago, Houston – most active markets in 2024; Q1 & Q2 most partner moves; partners with 10 – 20 years experience most active.

WHAT WE’RE SEEING

2024 ARE UP 9 PERCENT FROM 2023

Twenty-twenty-four was nine percent more active than 2023 and the third most active year since 2020, the least active year.

Activity picked up in 2021, peaked in 2022, and then dropped in 2023 to its lowest level since 2020. The nine percent increase in 2024 suggests that 2023 was lower than average, perhaps due to so much movement in 2022.

NYC, D.C., L.A., CHICAGO, & HOUSTON: MOST ACTIVE MARKETS

NYC was once again the most active market, followed by D.C., L.A., Chicago, and Houston.

These five markets accounted for more than half of partner moves nationwide. San Francisco, Boston, and Dallas trailed closely behind. Movement increased from 2023 to 2024 in all 5 markets.

PARTNERS WITH 10 – 15 YEARS EXPERIENCE HAD THE MOST MOVES

Partners who graduated from law school 10 – 20 years ago were consistently the largest group of movers from 2020-2024. In 2024, classes ’04 – ’14 accounted for 51 percent of total moves.

MOST PARTNERS MOVED IN Q1 AND Q2 FOR THE PAST 5 YEARS

From 2020 – 2024, Q1 and Q2 were the most active quarters. Q4 was the slowest quarter every year except 2021, in which Q3 had the least movement. In 2024, Q1 – Q3 accounted for 83 percent of the 1827 total moves.
